Michael Cherry

J. Michael Cherry, PhD, Professor, Department of Genetics, Stanford University School of Medicine

Research Description: Dr. Cherry’s research focuses on the integration of biological knowledge and published experimental results into software/database environments that provide access to these data with sophisticated tools. He has been active in bioinformatics since 1990 and Director of the Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) a major model organism database since 1993. He is considered a leader in his field, evidenced by his election in 2015 as President of the International Society of Biocuration. His work also focuses on the unification of biological nomenclature as a founder of the Gene Ontology.  His research group includes Scientific Biocurators, Software Engineers, Data Wranglers and Bioinformatic Analysts that serve the biological research and teaching communities via development and maintenance of online public resources.  He is currently PI for of the NIH ENCODE project’s Data Coordination Center (DCC). The ENCODE DCC will analyze thousands of genomics experiments each year.  In addition to these expertly curated public resources, his group has developed curation interfaces for the NIH Clinical Genomics Project (ClinGen).  His role in the Stanford DRC will be to advise an experienced group of professionals in the Genomics and Analysis Core, including his Department of Genetics colleagues Hassan Chaib and Somalee Datta to provide the best resources possible to facilitate diabetes-related research.
