Diabetes Research Forum 2022

To mark November as Diabetes Awareness Month, the Stanford Diabetes Research Center (SDRC) organizes a Diabetes Research Forum each year. The seventh iteration of this series was held on Nov 18th, 2022 at the Berg Hall in Li Ka Shing Center. The Diabetes Research Forum is a symposium with presentations from Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) award winners. Members from within the center, including faculty members, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows attended this year. We had the following speakers:

  • Dr. David Maahs, Professor, Department of Pediatrics and (by courtesy) Epidemiology and Population Health: "Improving outcomes with diabetes technology from early childhood to young adulthood: 4T Study"

  • Dr. Kyle Loh, Assistant Professor of Developmental Biology: "Generating human blood vessels: a step towards vascularizing engineered islets"

  • Dr. Tandy Aye, Professor, Department of Pediatrics: "Updates on Type 1 Diabetes and the Developing Brain"

  • Dr. Catherine Blish, Professor, Department of Medicine: "Adipose tissue infection as a driver of inflammation during COVID-19"

  • Dr. Jen Ikle, Instructor, Department of Pediatrics: "Defining mechanisms for failure of pancreatic beta-cell development in a novel mouse model of neonatal diabetes"

  • Past Awardees:

    • Preksha Bhagchandani, Graduate Student, Kim Laboratory: "Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation promotes islet transplant tolerance and diabetes reversal"

    • Dr. Josh Knowles, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine: "Finding causal genes for insulin resistance"

    • Dr. Danny Chou, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics: "Toward U1000 Ultraconcentrated Insulin"

    • Dr. Jennifer Whistler, Professor, UC Davis: "Trafficking of the GLP1R modulates the incretin response"

Dr. Rick Kraemer, Director of the SDRC Pilot and Feasibilty Program, showcased the success of the program over the last 7 years. It was exciting to see the breadth of projects that have been funded since the center has received NIH funding. Dr. Kraemer highlighted publications and grants that have benefited from pilot funding from SDRC. He also thanked the support of partnering departments and institutes at Stanford that have co-funded pilot awards. The 2022 P&F awardees presented updates on their progress so far and received valuable feedback from members of the diabetes research community. 6 Stanford and 3 regional new pilot awards have been granted in 2022 and the awardees presented their proposed work that will begin in January 2023. Dr. Seung Kim, Director of SDRC, provided updates on the activities of the center and thanked all members for active participation.
