This U2C Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) initiative to establish a novel national Stakeholder Engagement Innovation Center for advancing equity in type 2 diabetes research (SEIC-T2D). A primary goal of the SEIC-T2D is to accelerate equitable engagement of individuals from and communities of diverse backgrounds and sectors in developing the research priorities and activities that involve them, particularly underserved communities, and those with the highest proportion of diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. The SEIC-T2D will provide highly specialized research resources to support field investigators by fully embedding communities, patients, and other stakeholders into the full spectrum of research activities through expert consultations and education in principles and methods of community-engaged research. New Investigator Gateway Awards for Collaborative T1D Research (R03 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
The New Investigator Gateway Award in T1D Research is designed to support a robust pipeline of innovative projects and talented new investigators in T1D research. In addition to providing support for preliminary research, the Gateway program provides an opportunity for new Program Directors/Principal Investigators (PD/PIs) to pursue their studies within the intellectual environment of a select number of large, ongoing collaborative research programs. Embedding awardees within an established scientific framework in each of these consortia will provide unique opportunities for New and Early Stage Investigators to increase their understanding of key questions in the field, to network, and to establish unique and potentially long-lasting collaborations that will propel their careers forward. Bringing New and Early Stage Investigators into existing collaborative research networks will also benefit the networks by providing new ideas and perspectives.
Pilot and Feasibility Studies to Facilitate the Use of Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support to Improve Diabetes Care (R34 Clinical Trial Required)
The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to test an innovative and pragmatic approach to address barriers to and facilitate greater use of diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) by people living with diabetes mellitus. Research applications should engage key stakeholders in cultivating a practical and sustainable strategy with the potential for dissemination. The pilot trial of the proposed strategy should be designed to generate preliminary data in support of a future, full-scale trial to study broader dissemination and implementation to expand the use of DSMES.
Leveraging Precision Medicine to Improve the Lives of People with Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association is soliciting research proposals that leverage precision medicine-based approaches at all stages in the course type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. While this call is broad in scope and encompasses basic through clinical research, significant emphasis will be placed on clinical research and translation. Applicants should explain how their proposal directly aligns with precision diagnostics, therapeutics, treatment, prognostics or monitoring, as outlined in the Precision Medicine Diabetes Initiative's first consensus report in 2020(link is external), (Diabetes Care® 2020 Jul;43(7):1617-1635). Importantly, submissions should indicate how the proposed research will have a significant impact (“move the needle”) on outcomes in those individuals living with diabetes.
Innovative Transformational Research to Reduce Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity in Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association is soliciting research to provide critical funding toward transformational and translatable research to enhance minority health and reduce health disparities to improve the lives of people living with diabetes and its complications. For this funding opportunity, attention must focus on, and all hypotheses should reflect, the impact of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, health care access, and/or other direct factors that underlie diabetes health disparities, and describe how results will transform assessment and treatment of underserved groups and address significantly improved outcomes in diabetes or its complications. We encourage formative research, intervention development, and/or pilot-testing of interventions.
For the purposes of this RFA, we encourage interventions that include behavioral, social, or structural approaches, as well as combination biomedical and behavioral approaches that prevent and/or improve clinical outcomes for persons living with diabetes or it’s complications.

ADA is soliciting research to elicit sustained behavioral change at the individual and community level with interventions tailored to different racial and socioeconomic groups across the life span. Importantly, applicants should indicate how the proposed research will have a significant impact (“move the needle”) on outcomes in those individuals at risk of, or living with, diabetes. The goal of this RFA is to identify person centered, yet scalable, dietary and lifestyle interventions with the greatest potential for adoption and maintenance of diabetes-preventing or diabetes-mitigating lifestyles by individuals at greatest risks.
